 2006년 11월 독일 암스텔담에 한달 동안 가 있게 되었다.   주말이면 기차를 타고 근처의 도시들을 방문했다.   그중의 하나가 브레멘이었다.   브레멘은 말 그대로 동화의 도시였다.   어디나 동물 악대의 조각이 있었고 그림이 있었고 간판이 있었다.   친구와 집에 엽서를 사서 보내고 기념으로 아래책을 사 가지고 돌아왔다.

The Bremen Town Musicians

  A man once had a donkey, who had carried sacks to the mill unflaggingly for many years.   But now he was losing his strength and could hardly manage the work any more.   His owner intended to let him starve but the donkey, noticing that things looked bleak, ran away, taking the road to Bremen.   There, he thought, he would become a musician.

-옛날에 한 남자에게 아주 오랜 세월동안 무거운 짐들을 방앗간으로 날라주던 당나귀가 있었습니다.   그러나 당나귀는 기운을 잃어 더 이상 일을 할 수 없게 되었습니다.   주인은 일부러 당나귀를 굶게 했고 당나귀는 불길한 것을 눈치 채고 도망쳐서 브레멘쪽으로 가기 시작했습니다.   당나귀는 거기서 음악가가 되겠다고 생각했습니다.  

 

 After a while, he came across a dog lying in the road, panting exhaustedly.   "Why are you panting like that?"  the donkey asked.   "Oh," moaned the dog, "I'm getting older and weaker day by day and now that I can no longer go hunting, my owner is going to beat me to death, so I've runaway.   What am i going to do?"   "Do you know what?" said the donkey, "I'm on my way to Bremen to become a musician.   Come and join me.   I'll play the lute and you can beat the drums."   The dog agreed and so they walked on together.

-한참 후에, 당나귀는 길에서 지쳐 숨을 헐떡이는 개를 만났습니다.   '왜 그렇게 숨을 헐떡이니?" 하고 당나귀가 물었습니다.   "음", 신음 소리를 낸 개는, "내가 매일 매일 나이들고 약해지니까 더 이상 사냥을 나갈 수가 없어졌어.  그러니 주인이 나를 때려서 죽일까봐 도망쳤지.   뭘해야 좋을지 모르겠어"  "있잖아," 당나귀는 말했습니다.   "나는 음악가가 되려고 브레멘으로 가는 중이야.   같이 가자.   내가 류트를 연주하고 넌 드럼을 연주하면 되지."   개는 동의했고 그래서 둘은 같이 길을 떠났습니다.           

 

 It was not long before they saw a cat in the road, looking utterly miserable.   The donkey said, "What's the trouble, old Puss?"   "I have nothing to laugh about.   My life is a stake(at stake?)," said the cat.   "Now that I'm getting on in years and my teeth are not as sharp as they used to be, and I prefer sitting near the stove to chasing after mice, my mistress wants to have me drowned.   So I've run away.   But now I really don't know what will become of me."   "Come with us to Bremen!   Surely you still have a good voice.   You too can become a musician," was the prompt reply.  The cat, relieved and grateful, set off with them.

-얼마 지나지 않아, 그들은 길에서 무척 불행해 보이는 고양이를 만났습니다.   당나귀가 물었습니다. "고양이야, 무슨 일이니?"    "웃을 일이 하나도 없어.   내 목숨이 위험하다구." 고양이가 말했습니다.   "난 점점 나이들고 이는 예전같이 날카롭지 않아.   이젠 쥐를 쫓기보다는 난로 옆에 앉아 있는게 더 좋다구.   주인은 나를 물에 빠뜨려 죽이려고 해.   그래서 도망쳤는데 앞으로 뭐가 되어야 할지 진짜 모르겠단 말이지."   "우리랑 같이 브레멘에 가자!   넌 아직 좋은 목소리를 가지고 있잖아.   너도 우리처럼 음악가가 될 수 있어" 라는 대답이 돌아왔습니다.   고양이는 안심하고 고마워하며 그들과 함께 떠났습니다.    

 

 Soon the three runaway came past a farm, where a cock was sitting on the gate, crowing away at the top of his voice.   "What a dreadful noise!" said the donkey, "  "what is it all about?"   The cock answered, "I have forecast good weather, because it is the Day of the Virgin Mary, when she washes the garments of the Baby Jesus, and wants to hang them out to dry.   But tomorrow is Sunday, guests are expected, and the lady of the house knows no mercy.   She has told the cook to put me in the soup and this evening I'm getting my head chopped off.   So now I'm crowing as loudly as possible, while I still can."

-곧 세 도망자들은 한 농장을 지나가게 되었는데 한 마리의 수탉 대문위에 올라가 높은 목소리로 울고 있었습니다.   "얼마나 공포스러운 목소린지!" 당나귀가 말했습니다.   "왜 그러는거니?"   닭이 대답했습니다.   "나는 날씨가 좋을 거라고 알려주는거야.   성모마리아 헌축일에는 주인이 아기 예수의 옷들을 세탁해서 말리기 위해 밖에 널거든.   근데 내일은 일요일이라 손님들이 올거야.   우리 안주인은 동정심도 없지.   요리사에게 나를 죽여서 스프를 만들라고 했어.   오늘밤 내 머리가 잘릴거라구.  그래서 내가 할 수 있는 동안 가능한 큰 목소리로 울고 있는 거라구."

 

 The donkey said, "Come away with us instead.   We're going to Bremen.   That is much better than putting your head on the block.   You have a good strong voice and if we all make music together, it is bound to be a success."   How pleased the cock was with this idea.   All four travelled on together.  

Being unable to reach Bremen that same day, they decided to stop for the night in a forest.   The donkey and the dog lay down under a big tree, the cat and the cock climbed up into the branches, the cock fluttering right up to the top, where he felt safest.   Before he went to sleep, he had a good look in all directions and suddenly, in the distance, he ssemed to see a tiny light flickering.

-당나귀가 말했습니다.   "우리랑 같이 가.   우린 브레멘으로 가는 중이야.   벽돌에 네 머리를 대는 것보다 훨씬 좋을거야.   넌 아주 강한 목소리를 가지고 있어.   우리가 모두 함께 음악을 만든다면 아주 성공적일거야."   수탉은 이 생각에 아주 기뻐했습니다.   넷은 함께 여행을 떠났습니다.  

하루만에 브레멘에 도착할 수 없었기 때문에 그들은 숲에서 밤을 보내기로 결정했습니다.   당나귀와 개는 큰 나무 밑에 엎드렸고 고양이와 수탉은 가지 위로 올라갔고 수탉은 가장 안전하다고 여겨지는 맨꼭대기로 날아 올라갔습니다.   잠들기 전에 수탉은 사방을 살펴 보았는데 멀리서 아주 작은 불빛이 반짝이는 것을 보았습니다.    

 

He called to his companions that he had found a house with a lamp burning.   The donkey replied, "Let's move on and try to find it.   This is not such a good place to stay."   The dog said, "A few bones with a bit of meat on them would do me good."   So off they went towards the light, which soon became stronger and brighter, until they found themselves at a robbers' den.   The donkey, the biggest of the four, looked in at the window.   The cock asked what he could see.   "What can I see?   I see a table laden with lots to eat and drink, and there are robbers sitting around it, eating their fill."

-그는 불빛이 있는 집을 발견했다고 동료들에게 얘기했습니다.  당나귀가, "우리 모두 거기로 가서 찾아보자.  여긴 별로 머물곳이 못돼."라고 말했습니다.   개는 말했습니다.   "고기가 붙어 있는 뼈다귀들이 있으면 좋을텐데."   그래서 그들은 빛이 있는 쪽으로 출발했고 빛은 점점 강해지고 밝아졌습니다.   마침내 그들은 도둑들의 은신처를 발견했습니다.   네명중의 가장 큰 당나귀가 창문안을 들여다 보았습니다.   수탉이 뭐가 보이는 지 물었습니다.   "뭐가 보이냐구?   엄청나게 먹고 마실 것들이 있는 테이블있고 도둑들이 모여 앉아 그것들을 먹고 있어."

 

The cock said, "Just the thing for us!" and the donkey added, "How I wish we were in there."   The animals put their heads together to find a way of chasing the robbers away.   Shortly they settled on the following plan.   The donkey propped his forelegs up on the sill, the dog jumped on to his back, then the cat on the dog's back and the cock flew up and perched on the cat's head.

-수탉이 말했습니다.   "우리한테 필요한 것들이야!"   당나귀는 "내가 저 안에 있었으면 좋겠다" 라고 덧붙였습니다.   동물들은 도둑들을 쫓아버릴 수 있는 방법을 찾기 위해 머리를 맞대었습니다.  그들은 곧 아래 계획을 세웠습니다.   당나귀가 앞발들을 창문턱에 대고 개가 그의 등위로올라가고 그 다음엔 고양이가 그리고 수탉이 날아 올라 고양이의 머리에 앉았습니다.     

 

At a given sign, they all began to make music.   The donkey brayed, the dog barked, the cat miaowed and the cock crew.   Then they stormed in through the window.   Astonished, the robbers leapt to their feet and in panic, fled into the forest.  

 -신호가 떨어지자 그들은 음악을 만들기 시작했습니다.   당나귀는 울고 개는 짖고 고양이는 야옹 거리고 수탉은 부르짖었습니다.   그리고 그들은 창문을 통해서 들어갔습니다.   놀란 도둑들은 일어서서는 고통스러워하며 숲쪽으로 달아났습니다.  

 

Now, the four comrades sat down at the table and made the best of what was left, eating as if there was no tomorrow. 

When they were finished, they dowsed the light and went to seek comfortable places to sleep, each according to his needs. 

The donkey lay down on the dungheap outside, the dog behind the door, the cat on the stove beside the warm ashes and the cock flew up to a perch on the roof.   Tired from their long march, they all soon fell asleep.

-이제 네명의 동료들은 테이블에 모여 앉아 내일이 오지 않을 것처럼 남아 있는 것들중의 좋은 것들을 먹었습니다.  먹는 것을 마치고 불을 끄고 각자에 맞게 편안하게 잘 곳을 찾았습니다.   당나귀는 바깥의 거름더미 위에 엎드렸고 개는 문 뒤에, 고양이는 따뜻한 재가 남아 있는 난로 위에 그리고 수탉은 지붕의 횃대위로 날아 올라갔습니다.   긴 여행으로 피곤해서 그들은 곧 잠들었습니다.    

 

After midnight, the robbers, seeing no light in the house, hoped that the coast was clear.   Their leader said, "We should not have given in so easily."   He told one of his men to sneak back and see what was going on.   The robber found everything quiet and went into the kitchen to kindle the light.   Mistaking the cat's fiery glowing eyes for burning coal, he held a taper to them.   The cat immediately sprang up at his face, spitting and scratching.   Frightened, the robber made for the back door, where the dog jumped up and bit him in the leg.

 -자정이 지나서 도둑들은 집에서 불빛을 볼 수 없자 모든 것이 깨끗해졌기를 바랬습니다.   그들의 두목은 "이렇게 쉽게 포기할 수는 없어" 라고 말했습니다.   그는 한 부하에게 숨어 들어가 무슨 일이 있는지 알아 보라고 시켰습니다.   도둑은 모든 것이 조용한 것을 알고 불을 켜기 위해 부엌으로 들어갔습니다.   그는 빛나는 고양이의 눈을 타고 있는 석탄이라고 잘못 생각하고 초를 들이댔습니다.   고양이는 바로 그의 얼굴로 뛰어들어 할퀴었습니다.   놀란 도둑은 뒷문으로 달아났는데 그곳에 있던 개가 다리를 물었습니다.      

 

As he staggered past the dungheap, the donkey lashed out with his hind hooves.   Up on the roof, the cock, aroused by all this din, began to cry, "Cock-a-doodle-doo!"

The Robber fled speedily back to where the others were waiting and said, "There's a fierce witch in there, who spat at me and tore me with her long fingernails.   At the door, there's a man with a knife, who stabbed my leg.   Out in the yard, there is a black monster, who set on me with a wooden club.   And up on the roof, the judge sits, shouting, "Bring the rogue to me!"   So I got away as best as I could.

-그는 거름더미를 지나면서 비틀거렸고 당나귀는 뒷발굽으로 찼습니다.   지붕 위에서는 시끄러운 소란에 깬 수탉이 '"꼬끼오"하며 울기 시작했습니다.

도둑은 다른 사람들이 기다리고 있는 곳으로 빨리 도망쳐서 말했습니다.   "거기엔 아직도 무서운 마녀가 있어.   나한테 침을 뱉고 긴 손톱으로 날 할퀴었다구.   문에는 칼을 든 남자가 있는데 내 다리를 찔렀어.   뒷마당에는 검은 괴물이 있었는데 나무로 된 방망이로 날 쳤어.  그리고 지붕에는 재판관이 앉아서 "저 나쁜놈을 나한테로 데려와"라고 소리쳤어.   그래서 난 할 수 있는 한 빨리 도망쳤다구." 

 

 

The robbers did not dare to back to the house but the four musicians felt so contented there that they never wanted to leave again.   And as far as I know, they are still there to this day.

 도둑들은 감히 그 집으로 돌아오지 않았습니다.  네 음악가들은 너무 만족스러워서 다시는 그 집을 떠나고 싶어하지 않았습니다.   그리고 내가 아는 한 그들은 지금까지도 그 집에 남아 있습니다.
